My Pets
Boo-Bo my orange cat is very special. I found him behind my mother's apartment building . The superintendent had him in a trap and was taking him off to the pound. He was about 7 weeks old and terrified. Fortunately for him I had my dog Alfie's carrier in my car. I told the super that I would take the little fellow off his hands so he proceeded to open the cage door and encouraged him out of the cage and into my pet carrier. It was a 15 minute drive from my mother's house to mine and he cried and whimpered all the way. When I arrived at my door I tried to figure out how I would remove him from the carrier. He was hissing, I knew he was wild and I didn't want to get bitten or scratched so I removed the carrier from my car, opened the door and jiggled him out onto the pavement of my driveway. He immediately ran away under a bush. I was worried that he might get hit by a car or starve since he knew nothing of this new environment. At this point there was really nothing I could do but put out some food regularly and hope that he would figure out that I was the source of his survival and return. Within the next 24 hours I saw him running back and forth across my driveway, darting under the hedges, and once curled up on my doorstep. The next day we had a sudden thunderstorm. The sky turned black and in a few moments loud thunder cracked across the sky. I could hear kitten cries coming from behind my neighbor's garbage pails. I peeked behind them and curled in the corner was little Boo-Bo looking up at me frightened and crying. I had to try and pick him up now, There was nowhere for him to go so I leaned down stretched out my hands and picked him up. He totally gave in, no biting or scratching. When I got him in the house to take a good look at him, he was infested with fleas, both his eyes were infected and oozing, I found out later from taking him to the vet that he had an upper respiratory infection. After he was all cleaned up he fit right in with the family. Boo-Bo is now with us four years, he is the most affectionate creature that I have come to know. He is forever attached to my hip.....following me wherever I go. He faithfully sleeps at the foot of my bed and waits patiently for me to wake. He climbs up on my lap and licks my nose and strokes my cheek with his paw. It is obvious to me that God led me to save him from the pound. Everyday we exchange God's unconditional love, I am so happy that he is part of my life. I love you Boo-Bo.
Alfie My Rat Terrier joined the family around Thanksgiving of 1996. While shopping at the Willowbrook Mall in Wayne, N.J. I decided to check out the Pet Shop. All of the little puppies were jumping and barking at the people looking through the window. Alfie was sleeping curled up in a little plastic pan, all I could see of him was the top of his little head. There was a sign posted on his cage that read "Going Home". Which meant to me that someone had put a deposit on him. Without seeing him I gave my business card to the woman behind the desk and told her if the people who bought him don't show up, give me a call. Three days later they called me. I went down to the Pet Shop and and picked him up. It was very strange, making a commitment to care for an animal that you didn't choose because you liked what breed it was or because of the way you interact with it. I knew nothing about this little fellow until I got him home and bonded with him. Alfie is a wonderful dog and a valued member of our family. He is a loyal companion and a good watch dog. Alfie loves when I take him with me to the office. He loves to play ball, jump in the air and take a swim across our pool. He is very charming and everyone who meets Alfie falls in love with him. He is especially attached to my best friend Elizabeth. I love you Alfie.
Windy While sitting on my front steps one spring day, I noticed a cat on my neighbors lawn eating a chicken bone. She looked hungry, and her hair was dirty and matted it was obvious she was fending for herself. Wanting to help, I approached her with a can of cat food. She immediately came over to check out what I had offered her. One sniff and a few gulps later it was all gone. She let me touch her but i sensed that she was cautious. She was a beautiful tri colored Norwegian Forest Cat. In the days to follow, she made several appearances for more food and we began to get to know each other. After a while she allowed me to pick her up, so I took her to the vet to get her checked out. She did not have any diseases or fleas, she had one eye tooth missing and the vet told me that she was an older cat. She began to take up residence under some shrubbery on my property. Outside cats claim territory and it had become obvious that she had claimed this territory for herself. I sensed that she liked being outside so I didn't try to force her to become an inside cat but I did bring her inside to meet and get to know my other animals. Once she had gotten into a fight with another animal, and came to me limping. Her left hind quarter had a hole in it and her leg was all bloody. She let me clean and dress her wound. She took aspirin for 3 days for pain and she was good as new. At diner time I whistle and call her name out my front door and she comes running from wherever she is. In the winter she sleeps inside. She is a good huntress and brings me little gifts, (mice and little birds) all the time. Smart as a whip she tells me when she wants to go outside or when she needs some love. Windy is a warrior, intelligent, proud, and a loyal loving friend who found her way to me. I love you Windy.
Julie In the summer of July 1999 my next door neighbor rang my doorbell to tell me there was a little kitten behind her house. I went over to check it out and there was the cutest little kitten. Gray and White with a squeaky voice. She was undernourished and appeared to be all alone. She couldn't have been more than seven weeks old. No sign of Mother or sister or brother. She was abandoned, totally alone with no food or love. I tried to coax her to come to me but she was wild and would not come - much more frightened than Boo-Bo was. I knew I had to help her or she would die. I had to outsmart her to get her. I saw there was a hole at the bottom of the wooden fence that separated her from me so I decided to make a trail out of bits of baloney that started on her side of the fence and under the hole and into my neighbors yard. I would sit on a chair right next to the fence perfectly still without making eye contact with her hoping that she would follow the trail which ended at my feet. She cooperated with my plan and I grabbed her from behind. I was right, she was wild. She dug into my hands and arms with her hind claws and ripped me open in several places. I got her into my back yard and let her go. My back yard is completely fenced in and prayed she wouldn't climb over. I made regular trips out back to check out where she was. Most of the time she would hide under my hedges. Each time I tried to pick her up she hissed after a few attempts she let me and immediately started to purr as I held her close to me. I knew she needed me to help her but in order to do that I had to break her like a wild horse. It took three days before I was able to bring her inside and introduce her to the rest of the gang. Julie is an Egyptian Mau, very independent, playful, vocal and affectionate when "she" wants to be affectionate. A pleasure to raise she loves to wrestle with my dog Alfie and antagonize Boo-Bo. I'm glad you let me help you Julie. I love you.
